Internal call for candidate suggestions are due June 15, 2023 for upcoming external research awards

NSERC's Alliance Advantage (formerly Alliance Option 1) will support Early Career Researchers initiate and develop strong research partnerships by offering a $10,000 voucher to replace partner cash contributions to Alliance Advantage grants, which will be matched with an additional $20,000 from NSERC, for a total of $30,000 towards your project. NSERC’s Alliance grants support research collaborations between university researchers and partner organizations from the private, public or not-for-profit sectors. On December 5, 2023, NSERC launched several improvements to the Alliance grants program, in response to feedback received and building on experience with the program over the last four years. NSERC will provide an overview of the changes and how they affect planned or pending applications. Sessions will be provided January 23 and 31, 2024 (French) and January 24 and 30, 2024 (English). This program is designed to equip researchers and HQP with essential tools, resources and knowledge to transform their research into innovations ready for market. NSERC will be hosting webinar sessions in English and French for the Collaborative Research and Training Experience grant program. The English session will be held on February 7, 2024 at 10am PST and the French session will be held on February 8, 2024 at 10am PST. NSERC is pleased to announce several improvements to its Alliance grants program. In 2022–23, NSERC evaluated the program through surveys, consultations and interviews with stakeholders. The perspective of the community, along with NSERC’s experience to date, shaped the changes described below. NSERC’s Alliance International grants team will be offering two presentations on the NSERC-French Agence nationale de la recherche (ANR) call for proposals on quantum technologies for university faculty members and researchers in December 2023. These sessions will take place on December 12, 2023 (presentation in French) and December 13, 2023 (presentation in English) and will focus on an overview of the funding opportunity, requirements, and best practices. NSERC's Alliance Missions Team will be offering English and French webinar sessions on the Alliance Missions - Critical Minerals grant program for faculty members. NSERC recognizes that opportunities to increase the impact of results may arise as your Alliance projects unfold. Effective August 21, 2023, NSERC is introducing a straightforward process for requesting a one-time, one-year extension with additional funding for Alliance option 1 grants. An extension with additional funding is suitable for active projects under cost-sharing option 1 that uncover new opportunities as the original award nears completion. This period of additional funding will help researchers unlock the full potential of the project and support continued collaboration among the grantees and partner organizations while they develop a new research proposal. SSHRC will be holding a series of webinars for applicants and research administrators on upcoming competitions.

MITACS is expanding and streamlining the process for program participants to request extensions to Accelerate projects. Until now, extensions have been granted on an exceptional basis. The goal of this process is to better support program participants and reduce obstacles to extend projects.

The Japan Science and Technology Agency has launched a new large-scale call for international joint research. The inaugural ASPIRE call (deadline August 17, 2023) is open to Japan-based researchers intending to conduct collaborative research with other researchers from select countries (including Canada) who are currently receiving or expecting to receive support for their research from funding agencies, such as NSERC. The European-Canadian Centre for Innovation and Research (ECCIR) and Visnea are hosting a webinar on June 21st to help researchers  tap into Horizon Europe, the EU’s premier funding program for research and innovation.

As of today, Mitacs will accept Elevate proposals on a rolling basis. One-year projects will now be accepted for a standard $60,000 award per year. The thematic award is no longer offered, so postdocs from any sector or academic discipline can apply anytime.

NSERC will be hosting a English and French webinar sessions on the Discovery Horizons program. The English session will occur on May 24 at 8am to 9:30 am (PST) and the French Session will occur on May 24 at 9am to 10:30am (PST). A short presentation of the program will precede a Q&A session. Please note the upcoming webinars on Horizon Europe. Targeting Canadian health innovators and researchers with international ambitions, these webinars are designed to help attendees understand and leverage Horizon Europe, the European Union's key funding program for research and innovation. With a budget of EUR 95 billion, Horizon Europe currently offers many opportunities to Canadians and will become even more relevant as Canada negotiates its "Associated Country" status within the program.

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) has announced the launch of the Mock Review Toolkit. The Toolkit is designed to allow individuals to familiarize themselves with CIHR’s peer review process by simulating the Project Grant competition.

NSERC’s Alliance grants team has organized an information session on “Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) considerations in the training plan in Alliance Grants applications” for Canadian university researchers who are interested in applying for an Alliance grant or who want to stay updated on EDI requirements in the context of Alliance grants. The session will be offered virtually at four different dates and times in April 2023. Each session will begin with a presentation on EDI considerations in the training plan, which will include tips and best practices as well as scenario-based examples, and will conclude with a period for answering your EDI questions. NSERC is pleased to share an updated Risk Assessment Form (RAF) for the National Security Guidelines for Research Partnerships. The updated RAF replaces the version posted on the Safeguarding Your Research portal. To support the transition, NSERC will accept Alliance grant applications with either version of the RAF until April 30, 2023. Starting May 1, 2023, only the new version will be accepted.

SFU faculty and research community members are invited to join the upcoming “EU Canada Science, Technology & Innovation (STI) Opportunities” webinar on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at 11am ET, hosted by the Canadian Mission to the European Union. The speakers will provide a high-level overview of available STI opportunities to Canadians with the EU, including Horizon Europe and Eureka.

The Government of Canada made an announcement on March 2, 2023, for $10 million in Stage 1 funding over the next 4 years through the integrated Canada Biomedical Research Fund (CBRF) and the Biosciences Research Infrastructure Fund (BRIF) for the establishment of five research hubs that will continue to grow a strong and competitive biomanufacturing and life sciences sector in Canada and ensure preparedness for future pandemics.   This has opened Stage 2 of the competition, which is an open national call for partnered proposals for high-risk, applied research, talent development and research infrastructure. The Government of Canada, through NSERC and SSHRC, is pleased to announce a joint research funding initiative, led by the US National Science Foundation, for use-inspired research addressing global challenges in climate change and clean energy. NSERC and the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) are pleased to announce their cooperation to enhance opportunities for research collaborations between academic researchers in Canada and Switzerland working in natural sciences and engineering. NSERC’s Alliance International Catalyst grants offer support for Canadian researchers to establish and initiate research collaborations with international academic researchers, while the SNSF’s Scientific Exchanges program supports research exchanges of up to six months between Swiss researchers and international partners. Canadian researchers may request funding through Alliance International Catalyst grants and their Swiss collaborator may request funding from the SNSF’s Scientific Exchanges program. Lotte & John Hecht Memorial Foundation of Vancouver, BC would like to welcome research groups to apply for funding opportunities in the field of major illnesses with primary focus in oncology. Natural Resources Canada has issued a Request for Information to collect information to gauge the interest and readiness levels of projects that would advance knowledge, awareness and confidence in medium- and heavy-duty zero emission or lower-carbon vehicles. This can include battery electric, hydrogen fuel cell, and natural gas-powered vehicles (i.e., renewable natural gas), engine repowers and conversions, as well as fuel-efficient retrofits, fleet assessments and smart logistics. NSERC is pleased to announce that Alliance Missions is returning with a new and exciting challenge to help address climate change, focused on anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The call will target interdisciplinary, collaborative research projects supporting net-zero GHG emissions targets. For the second year in a row, MITACS is offering their Business Strategy Internship (BSI) program that connects students from academic institutions across the country with businesses as the post-COVID-19 economic recovery begins in earnest. The award provides either $10,000 or $15,000 per intern to allow them to undertake a four-month internship project with a partner organization in Canada. Interns will work with their academic supervisor to co-design a project with their partner organization to work on the organization’s innovation activities, helping them improve their products, processes, or services. Throughout the internship, Mitacs provides online professional development courses to interns as well.

NSERC has announced the Alliance Quantum Grants for established and early career researchers to apply. Alliance Quantum grants will reinforce, coordinate and scale up Canada's domestic research capabilities in quantum science and technology through partnerships between university researchers and organizations from the private, public or not-for-profit sectors. There is no deadline to apply and this program will fund applications from $50,000 to $300,000 per year. NSERC will provide 100% funding for eligible costs.

If you intend to apply to NIH/submit Just-in-Time requests or Research Performance Progress Reports (RPPRs), please note NIH policy (notices NOT-OD-21-073 and NOT-OD-21-010) regarding the disclosure of current and pending support available to researchers. These are applicable for some proposals and all Just-in-Time requests and Research Performance Progress Reports (RPPRs) due on or after January 25, 2022. Please note this is an external requirement that may affect your ability to receive funds. Please also note that this disclosure may be time consuming, please allow 15 days for compiling all necessary info.

Alliance Quantum grants will reinforce, coordinate and scale up Canada's domestic research capabilities in quantum science and technology through partnerships with organizations in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.

Mitacs is currently facing an unprecedented volume of applications which is impacting their standard processing time. As a result, a five (5)-week delay is expected in addition to Mitacs standard review process on applications.

Researchers who intend to apply for a Discovery Grant (DG), Subatomic Physics Discovery (SAP-DG), Major Resources Support (SAP-MRS), or Category 2 or 3 Research Tools and Instruments (SAP-RTI) in the 2023 competition must submit a Notification of Intent to Apply (NOI) by the deadline date of Tuesday August 2, 2022, 8:00 p.m. (ET).

NSERC is pleased to release the revised Guidelines on assessment of contributions to research, training and mentoring. The revised guidelines promote NSERC’s support of research excellence in Canada and incorporate the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) principles by recognizing a broader range of contributions, including outreach and mentoring, and emphasizing their quality and impacts. The person applying for funding will now be able to select a broader variety of contributions and suitable indicators to demonstrate the impact of their work. kindly click on the link for more information.

Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy, Inc. (ACGT) funds research aimed at furthering the development of cell and gene therapy approaches to the treatment of patients with cancer. CIHR is seeking members for its new Standing Committee on Institutes. The committee will have a diverse membership made up of nationally and internationally recognized health research leaders who will provide advice and recommendations to Governing Council on matters related to Institutes.The committee will be composed of 7 to 10 members who will serve three-year terms. The deadline for applications is May 1, 2022

Anticipated deadline to MITACS current offer of enhanced leveraging is April 25, 2022. This is a provisional deadline based on the current demand, and it could change in case of high demand. As a reminder, MITACS currently offers enhanced leveraging so that partner contributions are matched 3:1 by MITACS vs. the usual 1:1 match. As of February 18, 2022, Alliance Option 2 has been simplified to one single cost sharing ratio of 100% from NSERC for proposals involving partners from any sector (private, public or not-for-profit). This means that the requirement for partner organizations to commit 10% of the project’s cash budget, when partners from the private sector are involved, has been removed. MITACS is currently offering a time limited funding model for its Accelerate program. There is enhanced leveraging so that partner contributions are matched 3:1 by MITACS vs. the usual 1:1 match. Internal deadline for these applications is Friday, February 18, 2022, 5pm PST.

The GACD seeks to fund collaborative, multidisciplinary and cross-cultural teams. The teams should include appropriate expertise in implementation research. Research should aim to improve health equity in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) or among disadvantaged populations in high-income countries (HICs). The Reviewer in Training Program The CIHR Reviewer in Training (RiT) program offers Early Career Researchers (ECRs) a learning opportunity to gain a better understanding of the elements of high quality review and the peer review process through direct participation in the Project Grant competition with the support of a Mentor. RiT participants will be assigned three applications to conduct practice reviews, attend the peer review meeting, present their review(s), and participate in the committee meeting.

Race, Gender and Diversity Initiative will aim to support partnership research to inform actions that address social disparities related to race, gender, and other forms of diversity. Researchers from post-secondary institutions, as well as those from not-for-profit organizations can submit applications for projects that are community-led and community based, and which are based on the lived experience of underrepresented and disadvantaged groups, including but not limited to women; First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples; people living with disabilities; racialized minorities; religious minorities; and LGBTQ2+ people, as well as individuals who identify as, or belong to, more than one of these groups.

Grantees in the final funded year of their grant are part of the yearly cohort who will be offered the Discovery Grants COVID-19 extension with funds. Please be advised that eligible grantees for the COVID-19 with funds extension will receive communication directly from NSERC explaining that they will be sent a system-generated email from NSERC. This email will prompt you to access a secure website where you can accept or decline the funded extension. The deadline to submit your response to NSERC is September 15, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. (PST). Accepting this funded extension will automatically disqualify you from applying to this year's Discovery Grants competition.  For grantees that hold a Northern Research Supplement, you will receive two invitations. You must either accept or decline both invitations from NSERC.

Due to an intermittent issue with the co-applicants invitation emails, the deadline for submitting a Letter of Intent to Apply (LOI) for Discovery Horizons to NSERC has been extended to Wednesday June 16 at 8 PM (ET). A workshop is being organized to discuss the feasibility and desirability of establishing a Canadian Biodiversity Observation Network (CAN BON) to transform Canada’s capacity to research, survey, and monitor biodiversity, natural resources and ecosystem services in ways that will better inform management and conservation. The emphasis of the workshop will be: (1) identifying existing initiatives, data and resources related to biodiversity observation and monitoring that could contribute to a CAN BON; and (2) evaluating ways that a CAN BON could enhance these initiatives through improved integration, collaboration or syntheses. The Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF) invites early career investigators to submit their work related to drug development for neurodegeneration to our Short Talks segment of the workshop.

Cannabis has been legalized in Canada for personal possession and use, but research with cannabis remains controlled. Any research projects that involve cannabis, CBD or THC compounds (regardless of quantity) require a research licence from Health Canada. Currently, Simon Fraser University does not have an institutional licence for research with cannabis. Proposed research projects involving cannabis should be submitted directly to Health Canada by individual Principal Investigators (PIs) as a personal research licence application by creating an Individual Account in the Cannabis Tracking and Licensing System (CTLS). The guideline for application is available at Cannabis Licensing Application Guide: Research (Health Canada) Once approved, provide a copy of your Cannabis License to Research Services (ors@sfu.ca) and the Environmental Health and Safety Department (cpeltier@sfu.ca).

On December 17, 2020, CIHR published a message from the Vice-President, Research Programs entitled Online discussion on systemic racism in Canada's health research funding system. The online discussion has launched and will be open until April 9, 2021. The content for the online discussion was developed in consultation with racialized and Indigenous researchers and stakeholder organizations. CIHR specifically invites the engagement of racialized and Indigenous communities with lived experience of systemic racism in the health research sector although the online discussion is open to all.

CIHR has launched the 2021 IAB membership cycle. Applications will be accepted until April 12, 2021. Each of CIHR's 13 Institute Advisory Boards advises on Institute-specific issues and cross-Institute initiatives. Composed of a diverse group of national and international representatives of the public, private and non-profit sectors, including the research community and health practitioners, Institute Advisory Boards (IABs) act in an advisory capacity to the Scientific Directors of the Institutes with respect to the full range of Institute activities. These activities include deliberations on Institute health research priorities and strategies and implementation plans for engaging the broader research community. The number of members on an IAB is between eight and 14.

The Royal Canadian Geographical Society and the National Geographic Society are excited to launch a new granting initiative that will help ignite a 'passion to preserve' in all Canadians. The initiative is named in honour of Alex Trebek. The late, renowned host of Jeopardy! and philanthropist had a passion for geographic literacy and supported both The Royal Canadian Geographical Society (where he served as Honorary President until his passing) and the National Geographic Society. The Trebek Initiative plans to support 15 to 20 grantees annually with grants of $15,000 to $40,000. A formal launch of this grant program with the application portal will open in early May. A webinar and website providing application details and support for applicants will also launch in March. The Funding and Award Opportunities Team will provide more information as it becomes available.

NIAID issued two Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) to provide an expedited funding mechanism for research on Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). In addition, in certain cases, NCI would consider requests from its funded grantees and cooperative agreement awardees to engage in limited COVID-19 related research using part of their existing NCI-funded resources.

The Government of Canada has created the DISRUPT COVID-19 Fast Track Government Support platform, a virtual forum that includes representatives from NRC, PHAC, and ISED. NSERC Alliance Grants Option 2 is Now Open During this initial phase, applications requesting over $30,000 and up to $100,000 per year will be accepted, and the number of applications each applicant (as principal investigator or as co-applicant) may submit will be limited to one within a 12-month period. There is no deadline. Interested applicants should contact their faculty Research Facilitator and visit the ISA website for more details.

The CANet (Cardiac Arrhythmia Network of Canada) has launched a number of upcoming research funding competitions in the area of arrhythmia research.

There are upcoming funding opportunity information sessions in the month of November, including NSERC Office hours and SSHRC webinars.

The BC Ministry of Health is soliciting input from researchers for the integration of research evidence into policy and decision making. Please register your expertise (no later than November 15, 2018) to be considered for future funding.

There are important events this month including the NSERC Office Hours, as well as information sessions about SFU's new Research Administration System and how it will change the way faculty apply for ethics and research funding.

MSFHR is currently revamping their suite of funding programs including Scholar Awards, Convening & Collaborating (C2) Awards, Innovation to Commercialization (I2C) Awards, Reach Awards, and others.
