Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Arthur B. McDonald Fellowships
Arthur B. McDonald Fellowships (recognized as the Steacie Memorial Fellowships until 2020) recognize early-stage academic researchers in the NSE and support them to enhance their research capacity so that they can become leaders in the field and inspire others. NSERC awards up to six McDonald Fellowships each year.
Value: Each fellow receives a research grant of $250,000 over two years; the Fellowship normally also includes a contribution of up to $90,000 per year to the university toward the fellow's salary (reduced to $30,000 per year if the Fellow holds a CRC). Successful fellows are relieved of teaching and administrative duties so that they can devote all their time and energy to research.
Eligibility: Any applicant who holds an NSERC grant and took up their first independent academic position within the last 10 years (on or after June 1 of the year of competition, not counting eligible delays in research) is eligible.
Note: NSERC has shifted the timeline for its suite of prizes to better align with the public announcement of the recipients. The next call for nominations will be launched in August in parallel with any updates to prizes program literature on NSERC’s website. These are limited submission applications that require institutional endorsement. A maximum of six (6) nominations from SFU are permitted each year. To be included in the internal competition, please submit a candidate suggestion form by the internal deadline to recommend a candidate to the President’s Advisory Committee on Awards, Honours and Prizes. As this award carries research funding, an SFU Signature sheet and copy of the full nomination package will be due to ors@sfu.ca no later than 3 business days before the agency deadline. Only those candidates who have been recommended by the internal awards committee will advance to submission (see above internal process).
