The Synergy Awards for Innovation honour partnerships of strong, complementary and collaborative teams who have generated new knowledge and accelerated the application of research results to create benefits for Canada and Canadians. The award recognizes outstanding teams who have combined their expertise and resources to create partnerships resulting in significant impacts. 

Value: Three awards will be offered to three different Canadian partnerships. The winners (principal nominees) will each receive a $200,000 NSERC research grant. Partner organizations will each receive a $50,000 voucher valid for the cash portion of their required contribution to a new research partnerships grant

Eligibility for University partnerships: A partnership between an eligible Canadian university and one or more partner organizations. The nominated partnership must be for research in the natural sciences or engineering. It must have also been supported, in whole or in part, by at least one NSERC Research Partnerships grant, i.e., Engage, Collaborative Research and Development, Strategic Partnerships (Projects or Networks), Industrial Research Chair, Idea to Innovation, Alliance or Calls for Collaborative Research Projects. In addition, the partnership must be between a Canadian university professor or group of professors, and one or more partnering organizations from the private, public or not-for-profit sectors. Self-nominations (either by a nominee, co-nominee or one of the partnering organizations) will not be accepted.

Note: NSERC has shifted the timeline for its suite of prizes to better align with the public announcement of the recipients. The next call for nominations will be launched in August in parallel with any updates to prizes program literature on NSERC’s website. These nominations/applications require institutional endorsement. To recommend a candidate to the President’s Advisory Committee on Awards, Honours and Prizes, please submit a candidate suggestion form by the internal deadline. As this award carries research funding, an SFU Signature sheet and copy of the full nomination package will be due to ors@sfu.ca no later than 3 business days before the agency deadline
