Established in 1967 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Order of Canada is the cornerstone of the Canadian Honours System, and recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation. The Order recognizes people in all sectors of Canadian society. Their contributions are varied, yet they have all enriched the lives of others and made a difference to this country. Between 400 and 600 nominations are considered by the Advisory Council each year. About 150 appointments are recommended each year.

These awards have an open submission process - submissions are accepted year round. Case review typically takes up to two years.

Eligibility: All living Canadians are eligible for the Order of Canada, with the exception of federal and provincial politicians and judges while in office. Any Canadian is welcome to nominate a deserving individual as a candidate for appointment to the Order of Canada.

Internal process: These are confidential nominations and the nominee is not to be informed of their nomination. To suggest a colleague for institutional nomination (individuals may also nominate candidates outside of the institutional process), please submit a candidate suggestion form to recommend a candidate to the President’s Advisory Committee on Awards, Honours and Prizes.
